5. Q: What is post-frame construction?

A: Post-frame constructions are engineered wood-frame building systems that feature a clear span truss supported by two large, solid-sawn posts or laminated columns instead of wood studs, steel framing or concrete masonry. This building system is supported by an interlocking system of purling, girts, and sheathing. Post-frame buildings transfer loads to the ground through the posts, which are typically embedded in the ground or surface-mounted to a concrete pier or masonry foundation.

6. Q: Is post-frame construction cheaper?

A: While post-frame construction is typically more cost effective than other building methods, cheaper implies lower quality and nothing could be further from the truth. Post-frame structures are more quickly erected than other kinds of buildings. Because the larger posts and the interlocking frame can handle greater loads than stud-wall construction, fewer structural materials are needed – which saves on material and installation costs. In certain instances other building methods may become more competitive.

8. Q: How long will it take for my building to be constructed?

A: This differs by building size and type, time of year/season, and our current schedule. Usually, it is about four to six weeks from the time your contract is signed until the construction of your building is complete, although in certain common building sizes, this may be as soon as two to four weeks. However, during peak construction season this lead time could extend out to eight to ten weeks.

9. Q: Are Fingerlakes Construction buildings more expensive than the competition?

A: Fingerlakes Construction buildings are very competitively priced and highly engineered to meet all of your building needs. In many cases Fingerlakes Construction buildings will be less expensive than other post frame companies and in some cases, they may be more. By manufacturing our own trusses, columns, roofing, and siding, Fingerlakes Construction is able to lower costs and to pass along these savings to our customers.

10. Q: How far apart are your posts?

A: As a general rule they are 9 feet on center. This may vary depending upon loading requirements and door locations. Additionally a 2” x 6” stiffener is added 4.5 feet on center or half way between posts that both support additional trusses and at the same time add to the overall lateral strength of the building.

11. Q: What can a pole building be used for?

A: Post-frame buildings remain the selection of choice for most agricultural buildings, including horse barns, riding arenas and other equine, livestock and storage applications. Post frame is suitable for almost any low-rise commercial building. Architects and building owners select post frame for their retail shops, strip malls, office buildings, clinics, stores, hotels, and other commercial structures. Post frame is often used for industrial buildings. Post-frame construction is ideal for warehouses, manufacturing plants, storage and other industrial facilities.

An increasing number of builders are using post frame for institutional and public buildings such as firehouses, schools, churches, and healthcare facilities. Homeowners select post frame for their residential building, garage, or remodeling projects thanks to its energy efficiency, durability, and design versatility. More and more homeowners and building management companies customize their building’s exterior and interior design with a post-frame foundation.
